cross ~ (A) ~ a piece of wood that someone has fastened across another piece. People put Jesus on a cross to kill him.
cross ~ (A) ~ two pieces of wood that someone has fixed together. The Romans killed people by fixing them to a cross to die. Jesus died on a cross; the cross is now the mark of the church of Christ; to carry your cross means not to put yourself first but to put Jesus and other people first in your life.
