scroll ~ (B) ~ The ancient shape of a book. The maker of a scroll needed a very long piece of animal skin. Then the scribe would usually write on one side only. The first Christians needed to produce books more cheaply. So they sewed together short pieces of skin. And they wrote on both sides. So they were among the first people to use books that have a modern shape.
