tax-collector ~ (A) ~ the man who took the taxes for the government.
tax-collector ~ (B) ~ In the Gospels , tax-collectors took money from the Jews . Then the tax-collectors paid this money to the Romans , who were the Jews ' enemies. Moreover, many tax-collectors were not honest. They took even more money than the law allowed them to take. So the people hated these tax-collectors.
