Johnís First Letter

Chapter 1

The Man with the *Message about the *Life that never ends

v1 When everything began, God was there. He had a *Message. That *Message told us about Life. It is a *Life that never ends. We ourselves heard this *Message. And we actually saw the person who told it to us. Also, we touched him. v2 He gives people this *Life that never ends. He came to this world, and we saw him then. All that we tell you is true. We are telling you about this person, the one who tells us about the *Life that never ends. He was always there with God our *Father. Then he came to this world and we saw him. v3 We *apostles are telling you about what we saw. We tell you what we heard him say. He said that all of us can have the *Life that never ends. We have this *Life and we want you to have it too. We share this *Life with God our *Father. We also share it with Godís *Son, Jesus Christ. He is the one who came. v4 And we are writing this letter to you *believers to tell you about these things. They will make you very happy, when you believe them.

The light that God gives overcomes the darkness of *sin

v5 Jesus told us about God. ĎGod is all clear, as clear as light. *Sin makes everything dark, but God is not dark. He does no evil thingsí, Jesus said. And we *apostles want to tell you this.

v6 If we *believers continue to do wrong things, then we are living in the dark. We can not say that we live with God. We are not sharing the *Life that never ends with him. We are telling lies. We know what is true, but we are not doing it. v7 God only does good things. If we do good things, as God does, that makes everything as clear as light. Then we share the *Life that never ends with each other. Jesus, Godís *Son, gave his life for us. He poured out his blood for us, and this removes all our *sins. v8 Perhaps we say that we do not do any wrong things. Then we are lying to ourselves. We are believing something wrong. We are saying that we will not believe God. v9 However, we can be ashamed of those wrong things. We can tell God about all the wrong things that we have done. Then he will forgive us. We can always trust him. He will remove our *sins from us.

v10 Perhaps we still say: ĎWe have not done anything wrong.í When we say that, we say that God tells lies. So, we have not heard what God says at all.

Chapter 2

Jesus Christ will speak for us to God our *Father

v1 My children, you who believe in Christ, I am writing this letter to you: Do not continue to do wrong things. But sometimes even a *believer *sins. Then Jesus can put that person right. He is the only person who always does right. He will speak to God our *Father for us. v2 Christ gave his life on our behalf. He did this to remove all our *sins, so that God can forgive us. And he can remove the *sins of all the people in the world.

v3 We can be sure that we know God. If we do what he wants us to do, we can be sure about it. v4 But sometimes, we say that we know him. But at the same time, we do not do what he wants. Then we are telling lies. We do not know the truth at all. v5 We only really love God, if we do what he wants us to do. Then we know that we belong to God. v6 If we say that we belong to God, then we must look at Christ. We must act in the same way as Christ did.

The reason why John is writing this letter

v7 Dear friends, I am writing this letter to all of you. I am not commanding you to do something new. You have heard this before. God told you this when you first believed Christ. This was part of the *Message that you heard. v8 But for you, it is new. You know that it is true, because Christ behaved in this way. You did not behave this way before. *Sin caused you to live in darkness. But now Godís clean light is shining in your hearts.

v9 Perhaps we say that we have Godís clean light in our hearts. But then we hate someone. What we said is not true. We are still living in the darkness of *sin. v10 But if we love other people, then Godís clean light is shining in our hearts. And we do not cause other people to do wrong things. v11 If we continue to hate other people, then we are living in the darkness of *sin. We walk about in this darkness, and we do not know where we are going. We can not see in the darkness.

v12 My children! You have just begun to believe. I am writing this letter to you so that you can know this: Christ died to remove all of your *sin. And so God has *forgiven you. v13 Some of you have believed God for a long time. I am writing this letter to you because you know Christ. Christ was there when everything began. Some of you are still young and strong. I am writing this letter to you because you have overcome the *evil one. He is called *Satan. v14 I will write all this once more. You young (or new) *believers, you do know God our *Father. You who have believed God for a long time, you know God. He was there when everything began. You who are still young and strong, you have accepted Godís *Message in a firm way. You have overcome the *evil one who is called *Satan. v15 You see other people in this world. You see how they live. And you see the wrong things that they do. Do not desire to live like them. Do not desire the things that they like. If you just love the things of this world, then you do not love God our *Father. v16 There are many evil things in this world. People love *sin and desire wrong things. People see something and greatly desire it. People are proud of the wrong things that they do. All such things are wrong, and they do not come from God our *Father. v17 People of this world die. The wrong things that they want disappear. We *believers should do what God wants. Then we will have the *Life that never ends.

Some people fight against Christ

v18 My children! This is the final period of the age. We *apostles told you that an evil person would come at this time. This person will fight against Christ. And now many people have come, who fight against Christ. So, we all know that this is the final period of the age. v19 Those people once belonged to our group of *believers, but they would not remain with us. They were not really part of our group. That is why they left us. So, now we know that they did not really belong to our group.

v20 Christ gave something very good to you *believers. He gave you his *Holy Spirit. Jesus is Christ. He is the very special one who came from God. And now all of you understand what the true *Message is. v21 So I am writing this letter to you. Because you already know the true *Message, I do not need to tell it to you again. You also know about people who tell lies. These false messages do not come from God, because God always says the truth. v22 Jesus is truly Christ. And God sent Christ to rescue us. Some people deny that, but they are *liars. They are fighting against Christ. They refuse to say that God is our *Father. They refuse to say that Jesus is Godís *Son. v23 There are people who say that Jesus is not Godís *Son. Those people also deny that they can know God our *Father. There are people who believe that Jesus is Godís *Son. All those people know God our *Father. v24 So, remember what we *apostles told you when you first believed the true *Message. Think about it all the time. Then you will always be living near to Godís *Son. You will be living also near to God our *Father. v25 Godís *Son, Jesus, has given us a promise: We *believers will all live with him for ever.

v26 So I am writing this letter to you. I want to warn you: There are people who tell you lies about Christ. They want to pull you off onto another way. v27 Christ gave something very good to you when he gave you his *Holy Spirit. His Spirit remains deep inside you. You do not need someone who teaches you something new. Godís Spirit teaches you everything about Christ. He only teaches true things. He does not teach false things. So, always set your minds on the same things that are in Christís mind. His Spirit teaches you to do that.

We *believers really are Godís children!

v28 My children, your minds must continue to be one with Christís own mind. Then we can be sure that Christ will accept us. Christ is coming back again. We must not be ashamed and hide from him when he comes. v29 You know that Christ always does right things. So, anyone who does right things like Christ is one of Godís people.

Chapter 3

v1 Think about how much God our *Father loves us! He allows us *believers to say that we are his children. And it is true; we really are his children. That is how much he loves us! But many people in this world do not believe God. They do not understand that we are his children. v2 Dear friends, we are already Godís children (Godís people). God has not told us what we will be like in future days. But one day Christ is coming back again. Then we will really see him. And we will be like he is. v3 We are confident that we can expect this. And so, we must live in a clean way, so that no one can blame us for any wrong things. We must live just as Christ lived in a clean way, without *sin.

v4 People who continue to do wrong things are *sinners. They refuse to obey what God tells them to do. We *sin when we refuse to obey God. v5 Now, Christ came to remove *sin. You know that. You know also that Christ did not do any wrong thing. v6 So we will not continue to do wrong things, if our minds are the same as Christís mind. If we do continue to *sin, then we do not know Christ at all. We are not thinking as he thinks.

v7 My children, be clear about this, and do not believe anything else. God says that a person is right when they continue to do right things. They are doing just as Christ does. v8 But God also says that a person belongs to the *devil if they continue to do wrong things. And the *devil has *sinned all the time since this world began. However, Godís *Son came to destroy completely all that the *devil has done. That is why Godís *Son became a human person like all of us. v9 And so, we do not continue to *sin if we are Godís children (Godís people). Godís *Spirit is a powerful force deep inside us. In this way, he makes us become his people. Then we do not continue to *sin. v10 You can know who are Godís people. And you can know who are the *devilís people. The *devilís people refuse to do right things. The *devilís people refuse to love other people.

We must sincerely love other people

v11 As *apostles, we taught you to love each other. We said that to you when you first believed Christ. v12 Do not behave like Adamís son Cain behaved. Cain was a person who belonged to the *devil. He murdered his own brother. Think about why he murdered his brother. It was because Cain usually did wrong things, and his brother usually did good things. And so, Cain hated his brother. v13 Dear friends, you must not be surprised at what people do to you. Many people of this world will hate you. v14 But we *believers act in a different way. We are sincere when we love each other. That is how we know for sure that we have begun the *Life that Christ gives. And we have left the darkness of death that *sin causes. Those people who do not love each other are still in that darkness of death. v15 To hate other people is the same as if we were killing them. And God does not give the *Life that never ends to a person who kills. We know that for sure. v16 We also know how to love other people. Jesus gave his life for us. That is why we should help other people. We should even be ready to give our lives for them. v17 We may see someone that we know very well. We see that they are poor. They do not have what they need to live. And yet, we have all that we need. We must pity them and help them. We might refuse to help them. But then we can not say that we love God. v18 My children, when you really love other people, you help them. Then they can see that it is not just something that you say.

v19 When we really love other people, we can be sure that the truth is deep inside us. Also, we are not ashamed in front of God. v20 We can pray to God confidently, even if we are ashamed of our *sin. God is greater than what we feel. He knows everything about us. v21 Dear friends, we can pray to God confidently, because we are not ashamed in front of him. v22 He will do for us whatever we ask him to do. He will do it because we try to please him. He will listen because we do what he wants. v23 God wants us to believe that Jesus Christ is his *Son. He also wants us to love each other. And Jesus also taught us to do this. v24 We should do all that God tells us to do. Then we will be thinking what he thinks. And he will remain at one with us. He has given us his *Holy Spirit. His Spirit makes us sure that our minds are at one with his mind.

Chapter 4

Make sure that any message really comes from God

v1 Dear friends, there are many people in the world who say that they have Godís *Spirit. Do not believe what they say, just because they say it. Always test everything that they say. You need to know if the messages really do come from God. v2 You can recognise the messages that really come from God. They will say the truth about Jesus Christ. They will say that he really did become a human person like all of us. They will say that he had a real body. v3 Some people will deny these things. They will say that Jesus was not a real person. Some people will talk like that about Jesus. Then you can be sure that that person has a wrong spirit inside him. That *spirit does not come from God. It is fighting against Christ. You knew that this would happen. You knew that people who fight Christ would come. And some of them are already here.

v4 My children, you are Godís people. You have refused to accept what these evil people teach. Godís *Spirit is deep inside you. He is much stronger than *Satan, who is the *evil one. *Satan tells other people in this world what to say. v5 These false teachers fight against Christ. They do not listen to God. There are other people who do not do what God wants. They listen to those false teachers. They listen because the teachers talk in the way that those people like them to talk. v6 But for us *believers, we are Godís people. So, everyone who knows God listens to us. People who do not know God are different. They do not listen to us. And so we can recognise what is a true message from Godís *Spirit. We can also recognise what are lies that do not come from God.

God loved us first, and he now teaches us to love other people

v7 Dear friends, we who are *believers must love each other. God teaches us to love each other. So, we must love other people. Then people can see that God has changed us. We are now Godís people, and we know God. v8 God loves all people. But people who do not love other people have never known God. v9 God has shown us that he loves us. He sent his *Son, Jesus, to this world. He wants to give us the *Life that never ends. v10 God has also shown us how someone can really love someone else. We do not love God completely. But God loves us completely Ė and that is real love! He sent his *Son Jesus to this world. Jesus gave his life for us. He did this to remove all our *sins. That is why God can forgive us. v11 Dear friends, God does love us so greatly, therefore we must love other people.

v12 No one has ever seen God. But if we love other people, we show other people that God lives in us. We also show that we really love other people because he wants us to love them.

v13 God has put his *Spirit deep inside us. So, we know that we are thinking what he thinks. And we know that he will remain at one with us. v14 God our *Father sent his *Son, Jesus to this world. He wanted Jesus to rescue the people of the world from *sin and death. And we *apostles saw him ourselves. So, now we tell other people about him. v15 Jesus is Godís *Son. Anyone who is not afraid to say that belongs to God. This is how any of us can always be completely at one with God. v16 Also we can be sure that God loves us.

God loves all people, so we must continue to love other people. Then we must think just as he does, and he will be at one with us. v17 We must really love other people. Also, we must think how Christ behaved, so that we behave in the same way in this world. One day God is going to *judge the people of this world. But we will not need to be anxious on that day. v18 If we really love other people as Christ did, then we will not be afraid. We are only afraid if we do something that God says is wrong. We know that God will punish us then. We have not yet learnt how to really love other people. v19 God loved us first. That is why we know now how to love other people. v20 We may say that we love God. But that is not true if we do not love each other. We may not love another person, although we can see them. Then it is not possible that we love God. We can not even see God. v21 ĎWe must love God, then we must also love other people.í That is what God told us to do.

Chapter 5

We are Godís people because we believe Jesus

v1 All of us who believe Jesus are Godís people. We believe that he really is the Christ. He is the one whom God sent. All people who love God our *Father will also love us, his children. v2 If we really love other people of Godís people, then we know that we love God. We know that we are doing what he wants. v3 Then people will see that we love God. They will see that we do what he wants us to do. And it is not difficult to do that.

v4 All Godís people can overcome the evil things in the world. We believe Jesus, and so we can overcome these evil things. v5 People can not overcome the evil things in the world if they do not believe Jesus. They must believe that Jesus is Godís *Son.

We really can believe what God has told us about his *Son

v6 Think about Jesus Christ. He is the one that God sent to this world. The *Spirit tells all of us that this is true. He told us that when John *baptised Jesus in water. He told us that again, when blood came out from Jesus as he died. It was not just the water at his *baptism, nor was it just the blood from his body. It was both the water and the blood that told us that. And Godís *Spirit always tells the truth. v7-8 God told us three times that Christ came from him. The first time that God told us this was with the words that his *Spirit speaks. The second time was when John *baptised Christ in the water. And then God told us again by means of Jesusí blood that poured out when he died on the cross. At all three times God told us the same thing.

v9 We usually believe what other people tell us. But we can trust what God says even more. God has told us about his *Son, Jesus. v10 We must believe what Godís *Son, Jesus, has done. Then we believe what God has said. If we do not believe God, then we are saying that he tells lies. v11 God has also said that he will give us the *Life that never ends. We will receive this *Life if we believe Godís *Son, Jesus. v12 So we have this *Life that never ends because of Godís *Son. But if our minds are not at one with Godís *Son, then we do not have this *Life that never ends.

God has given us, his people, the *Life that never ends already

v13 So I am writing this letter to you. I know that you do believe what Godís *Son, Jesus has done. And I want you to know this for sure. We *believers have this *Life that never ends already. v14 We are very sure that God hears us when we pray. But we must ask him for something that he also wants. v15 Then we know that God hears us when we pray. So, God has answered us already about what we asked. We can know that for sure. v16 Some very evil, wrong things that people do lead to death. But not all wrong things do that. You may see another *believer do wrong things. You should pray to God for them. Then God will rescue that *believer and give them life. But you can not do that if they have done a very wrong thing. v17 We *sin when we do anything that God says is wrong. But not every wrong thing leads to death.

v18 We know for sure that Godís people do not continue to do wrong things. Godís *Son himself protects them. The *evil one, the *devil can not hurt them.

v19 We know that we *believers belong to God. We also know that the *devil controls other people in this world. Those people do not believe God.

v20 We know that Godís *Son, Jesus Christ has come to this world. God chose him and sent him here. And he has shown us what God is really like. Jesus has made us Godís people now. This God is real. He has given us the *Life that never ends. v21 My children, do not *worship anything that is not really God.

Johnís Second Letter

John greets this group of Godís people

v1 I am John, and I am your oldest leader. I am writing this letter to all you in the group of people who *worship God together there. God has chosen you to be his own people. I really love all of you. Jesus is true. And all those people that believe Jesus love you also. v2 All of us who are *believers believe Godís true *Message, and we will continue to believe it for ever.

v3 I pray to both God our *Father and to his *Son, Jesus Christ about you. I ask God many things. I ask him to continue to have pity on all of us. I ask him to be good to us, because he loves us. May he help us to understand the true message. Then we will know peace deep inside us.

We must not change the true *Message that Christ brought

v4 God our *Father told us his true *Message. We must do what he says. And I hear that many of your people do that. This makes me very glad. v5 I am writing this letter to all you who believe Jesus Christ. I am not telling you anything new. You already love each other. But I want to tell you to continue to love each other. You heard this same *Message when you first believed Jesus. v6 We do what God wants. We all do that because we really love him. And he told you to love him from the beginning.

v7 Many people have left us. They now tell lies to other people about Christ. They want to pull those other people away from the true *Message. They say that Jesus Christ did not really become a human person like us. But they are telling lies, and they are fighting against Christ. v8 You and we together have done a lot of work for Christ. So now, do not lose the benefit that comes from Christ. Do not believe the lies that those people tell. Christ can not be good to you at the end if you believe lies. v9 We must not change the true *Message of Christ. What we taught you are the true words. If you change these words, then God will not live with you. But God our *Father and Jesus, Godís *Son, will live with you if you continue to believe firmly. You must believe completely what we taught you. v10 Some people do not accept what we teach. You must not give those people a welcome. Do not greet them, and do not invite them into your homes. v11 If you greet them in a kind manner, people may think that you are their partners. People will think that you do the same wrong things that they do.

John says: See you soon!

v12 I want to tell you many other things, but I will not write them on this paper. I want to come there and talk to you. Then we can talk to each other directly. And then we will be really happy together. v13 God has chosen many other people here. They meet to *worship God with us. And they want me to tell you that they also are thinking about you.

Johnís Third Letter

John greets his friend, Gaius

v1 I am John, and I am your oldest leader. I am writing this letter to you, Gaius. You are my dear friend. I really love you because both of us believe Godís true *Message. v2 Dear friend, I ask God that you may be well in every way. I know that you are strong in your belief in God. And I pray that your body may be strong also. v3 Some of the *believers from your area have come here, and they talk about you. They say in public that you always do good things. You do what the true *Message teaches us to do. When I hear this, it makes me very happy. v4 You *believers are like my own children, because I helped you to believe Christ. And you still do what the true *Message says. And I am never more happy than when such *believers do that.

We *believers should work together well with other *believers

v5 Dear friend, people say that you always help other *believers. You help *believers who come to visit you. It does not matter to you if you do not know them. You never fail to help them. v6 They have talked to other *believers in other places. They told them that you love them. And you look after those who visit you. You always give them a welcome. Then, when they leave, you give them food and money. We should always do that for those who work for God. v7 Their work is to tell other people about Jesus. They need other *believers to support them. But they do not accept help from those who do not believe. That was what they decided. v8 So we *believers should support them, and in this way we can partly share in their work. They go everywhere to tell people the true *Message.

v9 That is what I wrote in a letter to all the *believers. But Diotrephes wants to be the most important one. He wants to tell everyone what to do. He does not listen to us at all. v10 However, I will come there. Then I will tell him in public about the wrong things that he is doing. He wants to hurt us, so he is telling lies to people about us. Also, he refuses to welcome *believers from other places. He does not want them to come to visit. He puts any *believer out of the group if they welcome *believers from other places.

v11 Dear friend, do not copy the wrong things such people do. You should copy people who love and look after other people. Those who are kind are Godís people. Those who always do wrong things are not Godís people. They do not know God at all.

v12 Demetrius will bring this letter to you, and he is a good man. Everyone says that he behaves well. What he does is just like the true *Message that he teaches other people. I, John, also say that he is a good man. And you know that what I say is true.

John says: See you soon!

v13 I want to tell you many other things, but I will not write them on this paper.

v14 I hope to see you soon. Then we can talk to each other directly.

I pray that God will give you peace deep inside you. All those here who know you are thinking about you. Please say this to each of those in your group there whom we know.

Word List

apostle ~ a man that Jesus sent out to teach about him; Jesusí special worker.

baptise, baptism ~ Before Jesus started to teach, another man called John baptised people. They had to turn away from their *sins. Then he put them in river water or he put river water over them. This showed that they were clean for God. Jesus asked John to baptise him also. People heard the *Holy Spirit speak then.

believer ~ believers are people who believe Christ. They hear and accept Jesusí *Message. They also meet together often to *worship God.

devil ~ the chief evil spirit; he rules all the evil things in the world. He is false. He fights against all that is true. It is another name for *Satan.

evil one ~ *Satan.

Father ~ (1) God is the Father of Jesus Christ. This does not mean that God the Father was married and had a son, as people do in this world. It means that God the Father is the centre and principal part of God. In many languages, it is more correct to say ĎGod our Fatherí rather than to say ĎGod the Fatherí. It is like saying ĎGod almightyí, Ďthe eternal Godí and so on. ĎFatherí also means that Christ came from him and is part of him. Christ knows the Father in the closest way, even closer than a human child can know its father. (2) God is also like a father to us human people. He loves us. He looks after us. We can talk to him when we want to. We can know and believe him as a person.

forgive ~ when someone stops being angry with another person who has done bad things.

Holy Spirit ~ He is part of God. He is the life and power of God. He is a spirit. We can not see him, but we know that he is here. He lives deep inside all people who believe what Jesus says. He continues the work that Jesus began in this world.

judge ~ say who is right and who is wrong; or, the person who says who is right and who is wrong. One day, this world will end. Then God will decide about what everyone has done. He will say if it was right. He will say if it was wrong. Then he will punish everybody who does wrong things.

liar ~ a person who does not speak the truth.

Life that never ends ~ Jesus has made a promise to any person who believes what he says. Jesus says that such a person will always live with God. Also, God will live with them here in this world. And they will live with God after their bodies die. It is a new life, and it is a much better life.

Message ~ the Good News of Jesus Christ, (the Gospel).

Satan ~ another name for the devil, the ruler of all evil things. He sends all the lies and false things into the world.

sin, sins ~ wrong things that we do against God or against other people. God is the one who says that they are wrong.

sinner ~ someone who does wrong things. Sinners do not do what God wants.

Son, Godís Son ~ Jesus.

Spirit/Godís Spirit ~ He is part of God. He is the life and power of God. He is a spirit. We can not see him, but we know that he is here. He lives deep inside all people who believe what Jesus says. He continues the work that Jesus began in this world.

spirit/evil spirit ~ a spirit is alive but we can not see it. It does not have a body, but we know that it is there. It is like the wind. There are spirits that do good things. And there are spirits that do evil things. We can not see evil spirits (demons) but they are there. We can feel that they are there, sometimes. They come from the *devil.

worship ~ when we think about God. We think about what he is like and what he is doing. And then we tell him how wonderful and how great he is. We can worship him by ourselves. Or we can meet with other believers to worship him. Then we all together say or sing about how great God is.
